About Reclaiming Counseling

Headshot of owner of Reclaiming Counseling

Pronouns: she/her

Hi! I’m Allison.

By now you’ve guessed that I’m a mental health counselor, but I’m also a VIP cat lover, spouse, and jigsaw puzzler with a past life in music and theatre (a real person!).

I started my therapy practice so I could focus on helping people like you escape from disordered eating and enjoy life again, whether that means trying that new Mexican restaurant you’ve been eyeballing or going to social events without being consumed with food and body thoughts.

I’m also passionate about helping you reclaim your power from oppressive systems (e.g., sexism, hustle culture, anti-fat bias) that are leaving you drained and depressed.

Origin Story

My reasons for these passions are personal. As early as elementary school, I struggled with confidence and body image, never thinking I was as good/popular/pretty as other girls and hating myself for my perceived shortcomings.

I tried to change my eating, body, and even my personality in attempt to hopefully feel good enough or at least cope with the difficult parts of life.

But instead of the happiness and confidence society promised, I found myself depressed and stuck on the restrict/binge merry-go-round.

I’d dug myself into a hole I couldn’t climb out of when some amazing therapists gave me a hand. With their help I learned to…

  • Accept who I am (mistakes and all)

  • Set boundaries

  • Be present with the people I love

  • Enjoy food without strings attached

  • Stop fighting with my body

Of course, things weren’t (aren’t) perfect. At times I was swayed to keep striving and conform to society’s standards at my own expense. But I continued to want more for myself and others. What could we accomplish if we realized we were already enough?

My experience gave me a passion for helping people break free from oppressive systems so they can invest their time and energy in what truly matters.

I spent over a decade fighting with food, my body, and myself before finding freedom. Now, I’m committed to helping you overcome these challenges so you can reconnect with your passions and make a difference in this world.
